Implantology

Implantology is the surgical field of Dentistry dedicated to the rehabilitation of missing teeth through the placement of dental implants.

Implants are titanium structures capable of integrating into bone tissue – osseointegration – and represent a safe solution for replacing one or more teeth. Acting as artificial roots, implants serve as the support pillars for the future prosthesis.

Currently, there is a wide variety of techniques and rehabilitation options with implants. To choose the best solution, each case must be analysed individually. A tailored treatment plan is prepared for each patient after a detailed case study, supported by radiographic exams, CT scans, and computer-assisted 3D planning, if necessary.

After the implant placement surgery, there is a healing period that varies from 3 to 6 months. Once healing is complete, the prosthesis is made and placed. In some cases, tooth replacement can occur on the same day as implant placement – immediate load implant. There are also cases where the implant is placed immediately after the extraction of one or more teeth – immediate implant.

Implants can replace a single tooth, an entire group of teeth, or serve as a means of retention for full removable dentures. Thus, a single implant can replace one missing tooth, but the number of missing teeth does not always correspond to the number of implants placed.

In the rehabilitation of fully edentulous patients, depending on the specifics of each case, the number of implants placed to support a fixed prosthesis with 12 artificial teeth generally ranges between 4 and 8 implants.

Implants can also be used as a means of retention for full removable dentures. In these cases, with the placement of 2 to 4 implants, the implant-denture connection increases the retention of the removable prosthesis, which is no longer solely supported by the mucosa, thus providing greater comfort during mandibular movements.
