Invisible Orthodontics
Not long ago, orthodontic correction was seen as a treatment exclusively for children and adolescents. Over time, with the evolution of techniques and materials—which also allowed for a significant reduction in treatment duration—more and more adults have been undergoing orthodontic treatments. As a result, the technology industry has worked to improve the aesthetics of braces by introducing fixed appliances with brackets (the part fixed to the teeth) that are increasingly smaller and made from non-metallic materials (plastic, porcelain, sapphire, etc.), aiming to make the treatment period as aesthetically pleasing as possible.
However, for those who want their braces to be completely unnoticeable during treatment, the solution is invisible orthodontics.
Currently, invisible orthodontics is primarily performed through two techniques: Lingual Orthodontics and the use of Clear Aligners.
Lingual braces are similar to conventional metal braces but are placed on the inner surface of the teeth, making them imperceptible to others. To minimize discomfort and difficulty pronouncing certain sounds during the initial phase, these braces are smaller than conventional ones. Because the technique is more complex and labor-intensive, it is not indicated in all cases but can still be used in the vast majority.
Tooth alignment can also be achieved through Clear Aligners. This technique uses a series of transparent, removable trays (aligners) that are replaced every one to two weeks. Each aligner is custom-made for each dental arch. As the aligners are replaced, the teeth gradually move until they reach the final prescribed position by the orthodontist.
On the other hand, the philosophy of orthodontic treatment among professionals has also changed. The primary goal has always been to achieve facial harmony, and the treatment plan aims to balance aesthetic and functional results. However, nowadays, it is increasingly centred on the patient’s aspirations, who often prioritizes the aesthetic outcome and may reject conventional orthodontic treatment due to social or professional reasons.
For these and other reasons, orthodontics is becoming more accessible to everyone who wishes to achieve the smile they desire!
